Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in. ~ Mark Twain
Each Kem Eskimo puppy is trained by us from birth using the following methods:
Put YES in your relationship. Check out this video on identifying positive behaviors.
Kem Imprint method ::
From birth each puppy is cuddled by our family. In addition to this we have developed a version of imprinting from birth, Kem Imprint method. Typical imprinting includes sound and touch; puppies ears being closed at birth register vibrations of sound, each puppy is therefore trained with a happy sound that can bring the an animal around to a happy place where retaining can begin. This is a technique unique to Kem Eskimo pups or any other pups that we know of. If you would like to know more we would be happy to share with you how this amazing method benefits the pups future health. Here is a recent article to read further on what Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia and other are saying about Early Neurological Stimulation.
Socialization ::
Each pup experiences carefully managed social activities by the time they are 8 weeks old. This means positive experiences in ALL of the following areas:
Our Prancer and Tundra best exemplify the good qualities of the American Eskimo. They are incredibly loving, smart and beautiful. We are a knowledgeable family with only two adult dogs. Prancer and Tundra happen to be high quality healthy. No rust eye, excellent bone, straight legs. It has been a joy to share these puppies, which will grow to have their parents’ excellent temperament responding well to any positive approach training method you choose.
Behavioral Shaping :: Accentuate the Positive
In the animal’s perception, punishment is a random, meaningless event. More effective is the combined use of an event marker and positive reinforcement in changing behavior. Behavioral Shaping.
The difference is in the animals’ attitude and enthusiasm as that animal works to earn rewards and behaves with strong intention to please rather than to simply obey out of habit or fear of punishment. Relationship with your animals will become stronger and more rewarding when everyone is focused on the positive rather than the negative.
Key-word ::
“Key-word” training is an animal training method based on behavioral psychology that relies on marking desirable behavior and rewarding it.
Desirable behavior is usually marked by using a “key-word” or “key-sound” which tells the animal exactly when they’re doing the correct thing. This plain form of communication, combined with positive reinforcement, is an effective, safe, and humane way to shape any animal to preform any behavior that it is physically and mentally capable of doing.
It’s not just about obedience or tricks. Using positive key-word training you can train-up the happiest, healthiest pet you’ve ever had.
Unlike marker training where a clicker device is used your key-word or key-sound can not get misplaced or destroyed and is personal to each dog you own. Any word can be keyed, multiple dogs will respond to their personal key-word.
A distinct key-word is more powerful for training than a spoken word because it is not a word or sound heard by the animal in other circumstances. It means one thing only: a reward is coming because of what you did when you heard the key-word. It can be produced instantly and at the exact moment a behavior occurs. Even a very quick and subtle behavior, the twitch of an ear for example, can be marked with a key-word.
Humans are verbal creatures, our pets are not. Our voices, can say the same word in different ways, and so express different emotions or meanings each time, therefore it is most important that your animal’s personal key-word or key-sound, sounds the same every time it is heard; its meaning should never vary. It can be difficult for them to pick out a single word from the stream of meaningless words they hear us speak every day. The key-word’s meaning, however, is always clear. It is always directed at the animal, and it is always good news.
The clarity with which a key-word enables trainers to communicate with their animals has a profound effect on their relationships. Their level of interaction increases, and trainer and animal become more interesting and fun for each other.
The trainer marks with the specific key-word at the moment the behavior occurs: the horse raises its hoof, the trainer says the key-word simultaneously. The dog sits, the trainer keys. Keying is like taking a photo of the behavior the trainer wishes to reinforce. After “taking the photo,” the trainer gives the animal something it likes, usually a small piece of food and eventually play, petting, or other rewards.
Sometimes within two or three training sessions, an animal will associate the sound of the key-word with something it likes: the reward. Since it wishes to repeat that pleasurable experience, it will repeat the action it was doing when it heard the key-word.
Any behavior can be trained with any animal /person pair following these three simple steps:
Key-point ::
It is most important that your animal’s personal key-word or key-sound, sounds the same every time it is heard. We use the word “yes”.
“Should i Use clicker training or marker training with my voice ? what are the advantages of clicker training ? what are the disadvantage of clicker training ? what are the advantages of marker training with voice ? what are the this advantages of marker training with voice ?”
Training success is play time! HAVE FUN!
Remember: While training, always be consistent in your commands, reinforce good behavior, don’t praise for something they don’t do (this will only cause confusion), and do make it fun! If you dread those training sessions, so will the puppy. This is a great time for the two of you to bond and to turn your puppy into the great dog you’ve always wanted. Just keep reaching for the goal of the day, when you have a two steps forward three step back day don’t worry about it; aim for easier goals next time, in time it will all be worthwhile!
Your new pack leader hat is for YOU and your new puppy. Here is how to successfully wear the new hat:
- Enlist your whole family in the process of bringing a new dog home. Discuss what their responsibilities will be before the puppy or dog arrives.
- On walks, through doorways, down stairs yes even down the hall! Make sure that your dog is at your side or behind you never in front. I will emphasize this point ALWAYS walk out the door ahead of your puppy when leaving the house. This will demonstrate to your puppy that you are the alpha figure.
- Set aside time every day to provide mental exercise by maintaining rules, boundaries, and limitations. When these needs are met, the affection you give to your dog will be channeled as a reward. This will include creating a schedule that includes a daily 30- to 45-minute power-walk in the morning. This is critical for your dog’s health, both physical and mental. All dogs require exercise to stay physically and mentally content. Assess your puppy’s energy level before beginning your days training, THEN begin to work with him. For example, if you take a tired dog on a walk you may be setting up for training fail.
- Give your puppy a command to perform before you share food, water, toys, or affection. This way the dog earns his treat. Have your puppy perform the Sit or Down command before you feed in the crate.

Here Estarla takes her first kayak ride. Each pup gets to play in the kayak on shore and cruising around the water with one of us, shown here take the initial ride slow and easy. Each puppy is assured along the way. Our goal is to gain their trust and help assure their abilities to do this we help them feel safe and create pleasant experiences. The following day we work up to a faster speed and head farther out on to the water. This is a building process it helps the puppies establish daily positive experiences, the trick is to do these things while they are still fresh and alert a tired puppy tends to get frustrated, so if you are having a bad training day, just chalk it up to tiredness and start again tomorrow with a fresh attitude and a pup well rested.
Here is Estarla enjoying a row boat ride.
She was the first to jump into the water and go for a swim. She really enjoyed the clamming and seemed to find the shore crabs entertaining.
Estarla is a bold little lady. She is our ONLY female this litter. She is fast at learning how to heel and sit and box training! She is friends with everyone even Rownee the cat! She has a lovely happy personality.
The weigh-in today(6/18/2011) : she is tipping the scales at 8.4 pounds!! All the pups are box trained. They love romping outside with mom and pop. Estarla is smart in her playfulness, she seems to strategize her escape from her siblings with the cunning and light step of a pro fencer (as in fencing). Her version of the sport is as much mental as physical, with strategy proving every bit as important as nimble feet and lightning (yes, quicker that Lightening) quick reflexes. After appropriate salutation the opponent, be it cat, human or pup, she assumes the “en garde” position, prepared to or launch into an assault of puppy play cuteness.
She has energy and she loves to romp in the clover and in addition to her raw diet savors the delights of munching dandelions, you can see an Aaadorable video of her doing just this (is all her cuteness) on our Week 7 page.
Estarla is Trinity’s pick.
Trinity loves this pup “because she can play the longest.” I have to agree, she really is a perfect example of the Eskie breed.
All the pups are box trained. They love romping outside with mom and pop. The pups went to see the vet -all is well, they received their first round of recommended vaccinations(6/4/2011). They took their medicine like champs!
Face: Nose: all black. Delicate features much like Prancer with a extremely slight Tundra ski-slope(CUTE!). Very expressive eyes.
Body: Her body is dainty and muscled she is like our Prancer this way, athletic body. Black paws with small white spots on each paw(this will change and they will be all black as she grows older).
Her ears: were one of the first to pop into their adult triangle shape. Skin is dark colored under her tail.
Lightening is going to make a family North of us very happy. We all met today at a lovely park and took seven pups for a walk.
Congratulations to Lightning!
Here is a personality profile for Enlighten pup.
Enlighten is also called Lightening. He is so quick to learn the tricks and acceptable behavior, they all are, however Lightening is just a bit quicker. We know Pounce is an ancient game going back to the time of the early wolf; if only there were an Olympic event for pouncing, Lightening would be a natural. This guy is the natural leader, he has shown his even temperament to take in his surroundings and once he approves move forward with a marked intelligence. He is very fun to play with and train. Here he takes his first kayak ride (7/12)
Yup, this guy loves to play pounce on his siblings. He lays in wait for the perfect chance and WHAMmmPOW there is Lightening! What follows lightening? Thunder, actually this puppy is Brandon’s pick, because he is SO easy going. He sits and heels so well too! He loves the cat and you can see what I mean by the video of him romping with MitMitz(week 9).
Who loves easy going Lightening? Brandon just loves this pup!
2. Super easy-going KemEskie puppy, named Enlighten. (Enlightening to become enlightened yourself in his company)
3. Spiritually aware.
All the puppies are happily learning their lessons. Weighed in today(6/18/2011) at 10.2 pounds!! All the pups are box trained.
Face: Thicker features; Tundra-type; Tundra ski-slope. Face: Nose: white centimeter dips into the top black; symmetrical white points on tip. Extra thick coat (CUTE!). Extra large expressive eyes.
Body: He’s muscular, thicker coat. Pink paws each front paw has three black spots! (Paw coloring changes with age to black).
His Ears: Left ear has popped up to its adult triangle shape, right has a sweet flop(the opposite of his brother CuddlePaw) this flop will go away with age and be a perfect popped up ear like the other…everybody’s body grows just a little differently). Very few Light brown freckles on his under belly, skin is dark colored under his tail base.

We’ve got personality! I will be describing each pup and their personality. Here is Dyanee’s(this is Rain) personal blog.
He will go up to high ground where his humans are and observe what is going on thoughtfully. This puppy is very smart, he takes to his lessons very well, enjoys his crate but would rather be in my lap or by my side. He is very easy on a leash and knows sit very well even with light distractions! He is very good at sitting for sckritches behind the ear when he runs up to me after I call(this is one of the many things we train the puppies to do). He is not afraid of the other animals we have here on the farm, he boldly approaches the horse and prances past the goats. Rain likes to tackle his sister Estarla. Below he nibbles a bone today in the yard after cooling down by jumping in the water trough.
Rain goes the distance with his human enjoying each step, pouncing on rocks and explore the delicacies under rocks. His exuberant personality and love for all things interesting is a joy to observe. He leaps through the sea-grasses and with carefree style. He enjoys cracking open muscle shells or finding shore crabs under rocks. 7/12-15
Dyanee(also called Rain) likes to roll around. He tumbles in the grass and seems to love to flip! I wish I could capture it on film! He is the first on his back for a belly rub. This little guy is bold and won’t put up with the other pups muscling in on anything that is his. He is a great puppy with a strong snuggle streak inside! Here is a video of his first Kayak ride on our vacation (7/12). His talent for taking on new things is sweet, he went on a 2mile hike today and was ready to play when we came back.
The weigh-in today(6/18/2011) shows he is at 8.6 pounds!! All the pups are box trained. They love romping outside with mom and pop. Rain is super playful, he wants to be in your lap and just be there. Once he is there he really likes to stay and get a belly rub.
If you like Pink little PuppyPaws, and getting caught by the Rain…
All the pups are box trained. We have a cute video of him playing golf puppy style! They love romping outside with mom and pop. The pups went to see the vet -all is well, they received their first round of recommended vaccinations(6/4/2011). They took their medicine like champs!
Face: Nose: centimeter black snip. Delicate features much like Prancer with a delicate Tundra ski-slope(CUTE!). Very expressive eyes.
Body: He is lean muscled with a runner-type athletic body style. Pink paws with single black spots on each paw, left front paw has three black spots! ![]()
His ears: were one of the first to pop into their adult triangle shape. light grey-brown patched on his under belly, skin is dark colored under his tail.

CuddlePaw has found his forever home! We are so excited for him we feel that CuddlePaw’s new family is going to provide an amazing life for him.
CuddlePaw is just super cuddly. He is quick to learn, loves to snuggle and would rather have a scratch behind the ear than a treat! This little guy is a charmer. The first to trust his own athletic ability to get over the log, jump on the rock, or jump into the kayak for a ride and we just love how this guy cuddles!
He weighed in (6/17/2011) at 10.2 pounds !! He is a big puppy and sturdy, I just love his athletic ability and agility, for a puppy he is surefooted.
Here is current video of CuddlePaw walking with me, sitting and snuggling. I love how responsive this puppy is!
All the pups are box trained. They love romping outside with mom and pop. The pups went to see the vet -all is well, they received their first round of recommended vaccinations(6/4/2011). They took their medicine like champs!
Face: Thicker features; Tundra-type; Prancers distractingly-perfectly straight nose.
Body: He’s muscular, thicker coat.
His Ears: Right has popped up to it’s adult triangle shape, left has a sweet flop(this will go away with age and be a perfect popped up ear like the other…everybody’s body grows just a little different. Light brown freckles on his under belly, skin is dark colored under his tail base.

This puppy is a joy to train! He is very smart and loves the new tasks I give for him to think about. His best trick so far is to run at you full blast at the whistle and stop with a sit at my feet for a skritch behind the ear.
Cloud bounded through the sea grass with pure delight in life7/14. It is sweet to watch this guy take life on full force. He makes me laugh. He is so happy to fill my lap, and leans against your hand to get the best scratches & cuddles with his people. He went running on the beach pouncing on random areas which must have held mystery smells. This fellow’s personality is very similar to his sister Estarla.
Cloud, Rain and Lightening. They have been aptly named. Sticking together the trio are a regular pack with Lightening at the head of the group. It is an amazing chance for us to observe the building of a pack in their body posture and the non-verbal communication these three share. Truly an excellent opportunity! Dogs are very expressive animals. They communicate when they’re moods: satisfaction, nervous, upset, fear, anger, and more. They use their faces and bodies to convey dog body language. It is complex well laid system communication which is for the most part nonverbal, fortunately, we can learn the language and use the system to our advantage. Any dog owner can better predict what a puppy is likely to do, the dogs feelings and motivations. Dog owners should learn how to “read” a dog’s postures the benefits are far reaching and will produce a better human /canine relationship.
Here the Cloud gets his first kayak ride in (7/12). I love how his tail helicopters, this video is shot at the end of our outing and his tail continues to fly.
We’ve got personality! I will be describing each pup and their personality. Here is Eccloud’s personal blog
Eccloud (or Cloud)is also a extraordinary pup. He likes to pounce on sticks, chase balls and carry grass in his mouth. He loves to snuggle and lick and roll and be just plain cute. He loves to be scrubbed between the shoulder blades. He weighed in today(6/17/2011) at 8 pounds of active sweetness!! He is a beautiful puppy full of curiosity and adventure. Very well behaved and loves his people.
I just love this guy. He feeds me CHICKEN!
All the pups are box trained. We have a cute video of him playing golf puppy style! They love romping outside with mom and pop. The pups went to see the vet -all is well, they received their first round of recommended vaccinations(6/4/2011). They took their medicine like champs!
Here is a small clip, where I am experimenting with the audio feature. Enjoy..
Face: Delicate features much like prancer with a Tundra ski-slope(CUTE!).
Body: He is lean muscled with a runner-type athletic body style.
His ears: were one of the first to pop into their adult triangle shape. Very light brown freckles on his under belly, skin is light colored under his tail.
